Get Lumio running in 7 easy steps
The setup wizard walks you through everything — from connecting your AI provider to syncing your content. Most sites are live in under 3 minutes.
Welcome
Overview and what to expect
After activating the Lumio AI plugin, the setup wizard launches automatically. This first screen gives you a quick overview of what you are about to configure and sets expectations for the process ahead.
- The entire wizard takes approximately 3 minutes to complete
- You can skip steps and return to them later from the settings page
- All settings are saved automatically as you progress through each step
- No technical or coding knowledge is required
Site Type
Tell Lumio what kind of site you run
Choosing a site type preset instantly configures Lumio for your content structure. Each preset auto-configures three things: the primary post type to sync, entity detection settings, and system prompt hints so the AI understands your domain.
| Preset | What it does |
|---|---|
| 🛒 E-commerce | Syncs WooCommerce products, sets product entity detection, adds pricing/inventory awareness |
| ✎ Blog | Syncs posts and pages, optimised for article-based Q&A |
| 📍 Directory | Syncs listings and custom post types (e.g. business directories, job boards) |
| 🛠 Services | Syncs service pages, tuned for service-based businesses |
| ⚙ Custom | Manual configuration — choose your own post types and entity rules |
API Key
Connect Lumio to an AI provider
Lumio needs an AI provider to generate responses. The free and recommended option is Groq, which provides fast inference at no cost. Here is how to get your key:
- Go to console.groq.com in your browser
- Sign up for a free account (Google or GitHub login works)
- Navigate to API Keys in the left sidebar
- Click Create API Key, give it a name (e.g. "Lumio")
- Copy the key and paste it into the wizard field
Bot Identity
Personalise your chatbot's appearance
Give your chatbot a name and personality that matches your brand. These values appear in the chat widget header and the welcome screen visitors see when they first open the chat.
- Bot name — displayed in the chat header (e.g. "Lumio Assistant", "ShopBot", "HelpDesk")
- Avatar icon — choose from built-in icons or upload your own
- Welcome title — the headline shown when the chat opens (e.g. "Hey! How can we help?")
- Welcome subtitle — supporting text under the title (e.g. "Ask me anything about our products")
- Suggestion pills — comma-separated quick questions visitors can click to start a conversation (e.g. "Shipping info, Return policy, Best sellers")
Layout
Choose how the chatbot appears on your site
Lumio offers three layout modes. Pick the one that works best for your site's UX:
- Full-page chat — a standalone page (like ChatGPT or Claude). Visitors navigate to a dedicated chat URL. When selected, the wizard automatically creates the WordPress page with the correct Lumio template applied.
- Bubble widget — a floating chat button that appears on every page of your site. Visitors click the bubble in the bottom-right corner to open the chat overlay.
- Both — use the full-page chat and the bubble widget together. PRO
Customise
Theme, lead capture, and rate limits
Fine-tune the look and behaviour of your chatbot. This step covers three areas:
- Theme picker — choose from 5 visual themes. Classic and Minimal are free; Dark Night, Pastel, and Glass are Pro themes. Each theme changes the header gradient, bubble colours, input styling, and overall mood.
- Lead capture — toggle on to collect visitor name and email before or during the chat. Enter a notification email to receive alerts when new leads come in.
- Rate limit — set the maximum number of messages a single visitor can send per hour. This protects your API usage and prevents abuse. Default is 30 messages/hour.
Sync & Build Knowledge Base
Index your content so the AI can answer questions
The final step indexes your WordPress content into Lumio's knowledge base. This is what powers accurate, hallucination-free answers. Here is what happens behind the scenes:
- Select which post types to index using the checkboxes (posts, pages, products, etc.). Each shows a count of available items.
- Click "Build Knowledge Base" to start the sync process.
- Lumio processes your content in batches of 200 posts at a time, extracting text, custom fields, and metadata.
- A TF-IDF vector index is built from the extracted content, enabling fast semantic search.
- A progress bar shows real-time status. Once complete, your chatbot is ready to answer visitor questions.
